Like many bands, The Millers came into existence for an ignoble reason: as a way to take the piss out of a former band mate.
I.E. Effectively reforming a previous band (without the offending ex-member) and playing noisier versions of their songs, alongside covers and strange, short songs.
Gradually we got more into it and spent a lot of time writing new material and gigging around the local area. People seemed to enjoy it - or at the very least used us as an excuse to get drunk - probably the BEST reason to be in a band.
(A big thank you to Brian's parents who would put up with us rehearsing at full volume in his room while they were in the next room watching telly)
We recorded these demos at Bandwagon Studios in Mansfield - for £25 we got to spend a day in a 24-track studio and came out with a pretty good recording.
We sent tapes off, and ended up recording an album for a subsidiary of Wilde Club records of Norwich.
This was a lot of fun, but with the arrogance of youth (coupled with a week in a proper recording studio) we messed it up.
FOR EXAMPLE - of the 7 tracks that got the labels interest, we recorded only three. And where the demo's are kind of sparse and homely, we filled every single track that we could with guitars and the notorious "edge bass". We were sent back into the studio for another couple of days of recording and came out with something that sounded even weirder.
While we were waiting for the album to come out (it never did), we drifted off to university, changed our tastes in music and went our separate ways. Brian and John to form Peru (see
peru-indiepop.bandcamp.com ), Giles and I to become Johnny Domino (see
johnnydomino.bandcamp.com ).
